Inside the book

What you’ll find inside.

A practical kit for freelancers and solo service businesses: work out the lowest rate you can afford to charge, pick a pricing model, write a proposal clients can say yes to, and get invoices paid without awkward chasing.

  1. Find your floor rate

Five steps to the lowest rate that still pays your costs, taxes and time off, plus a day rate and a minimum project size.

  2. Choose a pricing model

Hourly, fixed price, retainers, productised services and value-based pricing, with when each one fits.

  3. Run a discovery call

The questions to ask before you quote, and how to spot a project that will go wrong.

  4. Write a proposal that wins

    A section-by-section structure, a full proposal template and a follow-up plan.

  5. Use three options

How to build good, better and best packages so clients compare options, not prices.

  6. Negotiate without discounting

What to say when a client asks for less, and what to trade instead of lowering the price.

  7. Stop scope creep

Change requests, out-of-scope replies and how to keep a project to its brief.

  8. Know your contract essentials

The clauses every freelance agreement should cover, in plain English.

  9. Invoice, collect and chase

Deposits and payment stages, invoice essentials, a polite chase sequence, pausing work and formal options.

  10. Raise your rates

Raising prices for new and existing clients, and handling pushback.

  11. Onboard and offboard like a studio

Checklists for the start and end of a project, and how to ask for feedback.

  12. Worksheets and quick reference

Floor-rate calculator, project estimate, discovery-call notes, three-option builder, proposal checklist, yearly rate review and an invoice tracker.

Not for

  • Employees looking for salary-negotiation advice.

FAQ

Questions about this book.

Can I use the proposal template with my clients?

Yes. Adapt the proposal, emails and checklists and send them in your own work. The license only stops you sharing or reselling the PDF itself.

Is this legal or tax advice?

No. The contract and tax sections explain common practice in plain English so you know what to ask. Check the rules where you work, and talk to a qualified professional for your situation.

What format are the books?

Each book is a PDF, designed at 6 × 9 inches so it reads comfortably on a phone, tablet or computer. Worksheets print well on US Letter or A4: choose “fit to page” in your print settings.

How do I get my book?

Right after payment you’re taken to a private download page. Download the PDF and keep it somewhere safe. Stripe also emails you a receipt.
